Taxi PDA Review: Vodafone Smart Speed 6

The Smart speed 6 is Vodafone’s cheapest 4G LTE handset. It is part of the ‘Smart’ product family which also includes the Smart first 6, Smart prime 6, as well as the Smart ultra 6. The price is exciting for the taxi dispatch market, at just £49 for a 4G LTE phone. This is less than many people pay per month for their flagship device!

This entry-level devices has made the right compromises to get the price down but keep the experience up.

The Vodafone Smart speed 6 is made by TCL and is Vodafone UK’s budget Android device. You get a modest device that ideal for taxi dispatch systems, as you don’t need all the bells and whistles of flagship devices.

  • 4.5-inch, 480 x 854 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~218 ppi density) IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
  • Rear mounted 5MP camera, and single 2MP selfie camea. LED flash
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 1780 mAh battery
  • 4G LTE, HSPA, GSM, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, hotspot, GPS with A-GPS, FM Radio, microUSB 2.0
  • 121.6mm by 64.4mm by 11.8mm; weighs 112g

Display
The Vodafone Smart speed 6 has a 4.5-inch, 480 x 854 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~218 ppi density) LCD screen. It’s IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors. The is resolution easy to live with for use with any taxi dispatch software.

Sound
The Vodafone Smart speed 6 has a single speaker on the back, which is reasonably loud but distorts above the two-thirds point. There’s a 3.5mm headphone socket at the top of the device and sound is well balanced for music. When paired up with a Google account, Google Play Music, WiFi and a reasonably sized MicroSD card.

Performance
The Vodafone Smart speed 6 performs very much in line with other low-end hardware. The phone is idea for lighter workloads, so ideal for taxi dispatch software.

Cellular Data, WiFi, Bluetooth
Vodafone’s Smart speed 6 is a 4G LTE device. It contains a Quad-core 1.0 GHz Cortex-A53 processor built on a 28 nm die size, backed up by 1 GB RAM.  802.11 b/g/n WiFi, hotspot, GPS with A-GPS. The Smart speed 6 also comes with Bluetooth 4, which uses much less battery than older standards. It easily connects to your car kit and can stream music to a wireless speaker whilst multitasking without issue. Also, leaving Bluetooth on will not drain the battery too much.

Battery
The phone comes with non-removable Li-Ion 1780 mAh battery.

Conclusion
This budget Android device represents a compromise between performance and price. However, if you stick to one application and the Vodafone Smart speed 6 makes an ideal taxi dispatch PDA.
